Biosphere reserves are entitled to function as repositories of nature and at the same time should provide viable livelihoods for those who live and work in them. Yet this difficult task asks for comprehensive capacities in various fields of expertise. Managers and coordinators need to handle high levels of uncertainty and ambiguity in management outcomes and have to regularly meet ecological and development needs, obtain and interpret scientific evidence, and align contradictory interests (for example, individual versus collective) to name only few of them.
