A short overview of the GoBi Project:

The ongoing loss of biodiversity threatens humans and nature alike. While approaches of conserving nature in-situ by means of establishing protected areas has a long tradition, the integration of, and balancing with, human well-being is a rather "modern" approach primarily rooted in UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme.

Biosphere Reserves in particular aim at reconciling the often contentious relationship between biodiversity conservation and human development in and surrounding protected areas. Departing from the exclusion of people in management settings biosphere reserve management requires participatory structures and the integration of local knowledge, needs and interests. Although rural development is fostered, biodiversity conservation remains an important objective of biosphere reserves.

The Governance of Biodiversity (GoBi) Project investigates which appropriate management and governance structures of biosphere reserves and protected areas can contribute to significantly reduce the rate of global biodiversity loss.

The project aims at disentangling some of the associated complexities by integrating ecological and socio-economic approaches as well as by using a participative and multi-disciplinary approach that supports the advancement of better governance and management of protected areas.
